The treatment suggested below is not meant to replace prescribed medication
and your medical practitioner should be consulted before taking alternative
treatments.
Minor infections can irritate the back of the throat causing a reflex
cough as a means of removing the resulting mucus. There can be very little
control of this reflex action resulting in disturbed sleep with a resulting
lowering of the immune system. Some linctus and remedies are available
though experience has shown that the following technique can give a longer
acting release and relief during sleep.
The remedy consists of breaking plain chocolate, such as
Green and Blacks 70% cocoa solids, (www.greenandblacks.com) into small
pieces of about 10mm by 10mm and allowing one of these to
melt on the tongue. A gentle swallow will then coat the back of the throat
with a layer of chocolate. This has two benefits, it reduces the external
irritation of the mucus, and the cocoa, being a mild opiate will further
suppress the irritation.
At night keep several of the pieces of chocolate by the bedside and
take one as necessary. The best way to absorb the chocolate is to lie
with the head to one side and the chocolate retained in the upper cheek
thus allowing for a gentle diffusion down to the throat.
Experience has shown that the sleep patterns may be less disturbed giving
benefit not only to the patient but also to any sleeping partners sharing
the bedroom.
Warning. Do not apply this technique to small infants nor to anyone
taking sleep inducing medication, there is sugar in chocolate and this
can cause tooth decay.
